The Idaho Statesman's ongoing investigation into Larry Craig's alleged homosexual escapades has gotten quite a bit of attention for a story that hadn't even been printed. For those of you who've heard about the article but haven't actually read it, here's an excerpt:

I read a front page diary by MissLaura which contained this line:

"I'd add that if you buy bottled water on any kind of regular basis, I don't want to hear you complaining about the price of gas."

On the northern edge of Buffalo, New York there's an imposing marble building perched atop a grassy hill; a hill that slopes down gently to a small man-made lake ringed with trees. It's a beautiful spot, quiet and drenched in history, and I often find myself there on that specific sort of sunny day that was made for thinking.

The building houses our local historical society, but it was built as a pavilion for the Pan American Exposition of 1901 by an architect who clearly looked to the Parthenon for inspiration. The gardens and lake are part of an extensive city-wide park system designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, and President McKinley was assassinated while attending the exposition only a few yards and a hundred years or so from where I stand.

When I was in college I kept a journal, a dark red corduroy-bound book bought at the campus bookstore. Each night before bed I'd set down the day's events along with the occasional profound thought. I wrote faithfully, yet ultimately the journal was a failure. I was too afraid of it falling into someone else's hands to write candidly about my life or my innermost thoughts and feelings. I still have the journal, and when I flip through the pages now all I see are sterile yet still painfully awkward accounts of a daily routine peppered with names I no longer recognize.

Today is that rare gift... an absolutely perfect day. I woke to the good news of slim but encouraging leads in Virginia and Montana, on top of the gains we all saw last night in House and Governor races.
